A narcissist has a tremendous amount of self-loathing. This self-hatred is why they can’t handle criticism and will often criticize others for the same flaws they possess. Projection gives the narcissist away.

I know a couple of people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and yes, can confirm. 100%. Grandiosity is often a facade to mask self-loathing, which rears its ugly head the moment things go wrong.
